It is often surprising to learn where some of your favorite celebrities were born and raised. In many cases, you may assume they were from a small town and hit it big by moving to Hollywood or New York. In other cases you might assume they were originally from a big city, making it easier to be discovered or have access to the materials they need to achieve fame. Some of the most famous people in the world began their lives as average, everyday people and had run-of-the-mill jobs like a commercial locksmith or residential locksmith. The list of famous people from Charm City is long and in many cases, surprising. Everyone knows names like baseball stars Cal and Bill Ripken because they were famous for playing for their hometown baseball team, but there are plenty of other names that may be surprising.

Charm City is a hotbed for the creative arts and was home to many musicians before and during their careers. The town was a hotbed of jazz action and was home to stars like Eubie Blake, Billie Holliday and Cab Calloway. Jazz is not the only type of music the city is familiar with and popular musical artists including Cass Elliott of the Mama’s and the Papa’s, Adam Duritz, front man of Counting Crows and singer/songwriter Tori Amos are all from Charm City. If you are visiting the city and you want a jump on the future of music, visit a few local clubs and check out the local artists performing in the area.

In addition to music, a number of writers hail from Charm City. Many people credit the dark, somewhat hopeless side of the city as being an inspiration to authors and some well-known names might agree. Edgar Allan Poe spent a great deal of time in the city and his grave is still a popular destination for many visitors to the city. The city takes so much pride in Poe’s affiliation; they named their NFL football team after one of his poems. Another famous author from the town is Tom Clancy, known for his militaristic thrillers.

The art scene in Charm City does not end with writing and music. Filmmakers love the city and often scout out the surrounding area for great on-location filming spots. John Waters is a native of the city and knows how to show the truly charming side of the city, as he did in movies like Cry Baby and the original Hairspray. A number of televisions series have focused on the grittier side of Charm City, as they did in Homicide and The Wire. Those watching these shows may be intimidated by the harsh side of the city, but it is important to understand there are two sides of Charm City and both are equally interesting.

A number of popular political names got their start in Charm City and went on to big things in the federal government. Spiro Agnew, Thurgood Marshall and Alger Hiss were all from the city and became household names at one point or another during their careers. Keep an eye on the political scene in Maryland for a look into the future of famous national figures.
