10 Stress Management Techniques

While a little stress is fuel for motivation too much stress decreases quality of life mentally and physically. Therefore it is important we all learn some stress management techniques to be used when feeling overwhelmed. Our health will pay the price if we don't.

When you start to feel overwhelmed try some of the following techniques. They may help lift the weight off your shoulders.

1. Just let it go:
Easier said than done of course, but whatever it is that is troubling you, is probably less important than your health, so just let it go, and start thinking positive about the situation. It will become easier, the more you read, see and listen to inspiring material.

2. Take a deep breath:
If you are feeling stressed, take a moment to sit back, relax, and take some nice long deep breaths. Put your body into a state of relaxation and let the stress disappear. Better still, learn to meditate. There are plenty of audios available that teach meditation. Many can be downloaded immediately over the internet to your computer so that you can start now.

3. Talk to someone:
Get those problems off your chest. Keeping your problems inside is only making things worse. Getting an objective opinion on an issue plaguing you could be the best decision you ever made. Joining social networking sites and forums can give you anonymity if you don't feel you can talk to friends and family.

4. Write it down:
If you don't want to talk about your problems to someone, try writing them down and getting them off your chest that way.

5. Get a good nights sleep:
If you are stressed or anxious, sleeping is near impossible, but if you can just let it go and get a good night sleep, in the morning things just might not look as bad anymore. Sleep deprivation can make things seem much worse than they really are.

6. Listen to soothing music:
Nothing soothes the soul like slow rhythmic music. Put on a comforting CD, sit back and relax.

7. Exercise
Activities like Tai Chi and Yoga can help relieve stress and anxiety and improve your health. There's no need to join a group if you'd prefer not to as there are plenty of DVDs available for all levels of experience. Also, a brisk half an hour of walking does wonders.

8. Improve your self esteem:
A lot of stress and anxiety is self-inflicted, and caused by doubts in your abilities. Learn to believe in yourself. Obviously self esteem can't be improved overnight but there are plenty of resources available on the internet that will get you heading in the right direction.

9. Cut back on caffeine and chocolate:
Why are the best things in life sometimes the most hurtful? Unfortunately these things are major stimulants and bad news when you are stressed out.

10. Be organized:
There is nothing like good organization to help you from being stressed out when the tasks begin piling up. Many confuse being organized with being in a rut that leaves no room for spontaneity. Nothing could be further from the truth.

One of the best stress management techniques would be to stop pressuring yourself to be perfect at all times. Do the best you can, that is good enough. Perfection is unattainable anyway.
